NAMING NAMES - Elizabeth Chadwick

Among my research books, I have a copy of the Curia Regis rolls for the reign of King John such as they exist for the 11th to 14th years of his reign. 1210-1212. Basically, it’s a list of pleas and cases heard in the King’s court.

I thought it would be interesting and useful for future reference for myself, to go through the names of the people mentioned in the cases, as these are the backbone folk of England at the time. Prosperous enough to bring cases before the king, and some are high baronage, but by no means all. Most of them are ‘ordinary’ folks. What I found interesting while trawling, but didn’t have the time to go into detail, was that parents whose English and Norse names had survived into the early 13thc, were now giving their children Norman names. ‘William, son of Ketel’ for example. ‘Richard, son of Godiva’ ‘William, son of Godric.’ ‘Gilbert, son of Harold.’ Interesting. Another time I’ll look at the ‘surnames’ and occupations.’

I have placed an ‘m’ for male and ‘f’ for female at the side of the name. The bound volume I was working from was rather idiosyncratic and sometimes anglicised the names and sometimes left them in the Latin, so take as you will. For example the female name ‘Tiffany’ is rendered ‘Theophania’ in the original Latin, but ‘Tiffany’ in the book’s index.
